Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how the political and social processes leading up to the First and Second Battles of İnönü (January and March 1921), along with the course and consequences of these engagements, were reflected in the satirical magazine Karagöz. In the period preceding the battles, the newly established Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) was simultaneously combating foreign occupations and internal uprisings instigated by the Allied Powers and their domestic collaborators. Having already outlined the provisions of the provisional peace treaty -later known as the Treaty of Sèvres- at the San Remo Conference, the Allies sought to impose these terms upon the Turkish nation and the TBMM Government. To this end, they mobilized the Greek forces, which had previously been stationed along the Milne Line, for a grand offensive. By virtue of their 1920 offensive, the Greek forces had advanced to the thresholds of Central Anatolia. In response to this critical development, the TBMM Government enacted its decision to transition to a Regular Army -a strategic objective stipulated since its inaugural government program. However, this transition encountered fierce resistance from a faction spearheaded by Ethem and his brothers, a friction that manifested overtly during the Gediz offensive. Concurrently, a regime change occurred in Greece; King Constantine, who had favoured neutrality during the First World War, ascended the throne, prompting the departure of Prime Minister Venizelos. The Allied Powers subjected the nascent Greek administration to rigorous political and economic pressure to ensure their commitment to the Sèvres agenda and the continuation of hostilities, which ultimately culminated in Greece's preparations for a renewed offensive against the Turks. While the Greek forces were finalizing their preparations, Ethem and his brothers revolted against the TBMM Government. They summarily rejected the reconciliation initiatives proposed by the Assembly and, upon signing a protocol with the Greek command, directed their arms against the TBMM army in Kütahya. The initial Greek offensive commenced precisely while the regular army was preoccupied with suppressing the rebellion of the Kuva-yı Seyyare (The Mobile Forces). Met with unexpected and resolute resistance at the İnönü front, the Greek forces were compelled to retreat from the battlefield. Following this milestone Turkish victory, the Allied Powers -most notably Great Britain- convened the London Conference to deliberate on Eastern affairs. Deliberately ignoring the sovereign rights of the Turkish nation, they sanctioned and subsidized Greece’s demands for a subsequent offensive. Nonetheless, despite this comprehensive external support, the second Greek offensive was similarly halted at the gates of İnönü, routing the Greek army from the field. The Battles of İnönü resonated significantly not only within the press of Anatolia and Istanbul but also across the pages of contemporary satirical periodicals. In this context, Karagöz, one of the longest-running publications in the history of the Turkish satirical press, meticulously monitored these developments. The magazine masterfully reflected the pre-war socio-political climate, the military progression of the conflicts, and their domestic and foreign policy ramifications through its editorial cartoons. While offering trenchant critiques of the Allied Powers, the Istanbul Government, and even the mandates of the pro-Allied Turkish press, Karagöz successfully fulfilled its public relations and agenda-setting functions by fostering and sustaining the Turkish nation's collective hope for ultimate victory. Methodologically, this study was conducted employing qualitative research design and document analysis techniques.
